# For agents: Continuing work needs an operating environment

OpenProse today · board 14 of 17 · 2026-10-09.
This deck records dated experimental evidence, not general reliability.

A maintained-brief agreement preserves history while an external coordinator launches bounded invocations.

## On the slide

**A published example: maintain a release brief.**

Process one event batch.

Preserve accepted history.

Retain responsibility for the next batch.

The environment supplies future invocations.

## Explanation

The current maintained-brief example expresses a standing responsibility through bounded invocations. It checks event identities, distinguishes new events from replays, preserves previous accepted revisions, and retains a checkpoint and owner. Its environment delivers batches and launches agents serially. The contract expressly does not install a watcher. This shows how continuing work can be expressed now. The broader vision—automatic event handling, selective reevaluation across dependencies, and consistently inexpensive attention—requires dependable runtime behavior and further measurement. The bounded library evidence does not establish a generally reliable unattended maintenance service.
